The Denver Nuggets star won the NBA's MVP honor in three of the past four years.

Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Nuggets fell 147-123 at the Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself late in the first half during an accidental collision with teammate Jones.

His teammate landed on the footwear of the big man, who immediately went down to the ground clutching his knee.

The 30-year-old, that is leading the NBA this season in boards and dimes, had 21 points and eight assists in the game before suffering the setback.

He is scheduled for an MRI scan on the following day to evaluate the seriousness of the problem.

"Instantly, he knew he was hurt," stated Nuggets head coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Anyone who is injured, it's gut-wrenching, most notably somebody as special as Jokic. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Obviously, right now, I'm more concerned about him personally and the disappointment of experiencing something of that nature."
