Since the re-election of Donald Trump in the previous fall, a demoralised Democratic party has struggled to change a palpable sense of downward momentum. At a grassroots level, amid falling poll ratings, there has been a yearning for revitalization and a more punchy, combative approach in resistance. Against that discouraging backdrop, the extraordinary election of Zohran Mamdani to the New York City mayor's office is a moment for left-leaning activists to celebrate.

Starting as Outsider to Victory

Mr Mamdani joined the mayoral race last October as a progressive candidate with almost zero name recognition. He won it with more than 50% of the vote after the largest voter participation in more than half a century, and despite the strong attempts of wealthy donors to fund his chief rival, the former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, to victory. That accomplishment makes him the most youthful mayor of the US’s largest city for more than 100 years and the first Muslim to occupy the role.

Insights for the Democratic Party

New York is a traditional Democratic stronghold and is in no sense a national bellwether. Nevertheless, faced with a Maga movement that has built its wins on the support of laborers, the Democratic party can learn much from Mr Mamdani’s remarkable triumph. Leaving culture-war politics to his growing frantic opponents, he ran an aggressive campaign and primarily on the theme of affordability.

On an encouraging night for Democrats, a comparable trend was seen in New Jersey and Virginia, where more moderate candidates secured gubernatorial races by impressive margins. Cost-of-living pledges were again prominent, including a proposed freeze on energy costs and a focus on housing costs. California offered further grounds for a cautious rebirth of optimism; after Republican gerrymandering of congressional boundaries in Texas, voters supported countermeasures to restore the balance ahead of next year’s congressional races.

Challenges and Opportunities

As the Democratic party travels through the difficult period of a second Trump term, it would be fanciful to believe that a corner has been definitively turned. For New York’s mayor-elect, the tough work are yet to begin. Mr Trump has already threatened to withhold government money from an city government he will do his best to undermine, weaken and disrupt. More generally, the hesitation of senior Democratic figures to support Mr Mamdani’s campaign shows that party disagreements over approach are a long way from being resolved.

However, it would be ungracious to ignore early signs of political recovery when they appear. As Mr Trump’s popularity declines amid continuing financial worries and high inflation, the hollowness of populist promises to enhance working-class conditions is a major zone of weakness. An emerging focus on affordability roots Democrats in the preoccupations of their former supporters, as well as those who have stayed faithful.
