The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.” With the first season of the popular series reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus. About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that. “It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.” Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.” “It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in. The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus? Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats. “We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.” On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on. “I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings? “My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
