Sovereign to Deliver First-Hand Message on His Health Battle in Nationwide Programme

King Charles has recorded a personal message about his journey with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer campaign, run by a leading cancer charity and Channel 4.

The royal household said the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a individual battling cancer, in a video message on Friday evening at 8pm UK time.

The recording, recorded at his London residence two weeks ago, will emphasise the vital significance of preventative health checks to ensure more people detect the condition at an initial point.

This will be a rare update on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been in a course of therapy since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. However, it is believed unlikely the King will disclose his type of cancer.

Fundraising Core Mission

The Stand Up To Cancer event each year generates donations for scientific studies and patient care and prompts people to get health assessments to improve the odds of an early diagnosis.

The King's candid approach about his condition, and living with cancer, has been intended to raise awareness and to encourage more people to get screened - and this will be advanced with this unique personal contribution.

Up until now the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to keep working, preserving a busy schedule alongside his regular rounds of therapy, and he appears not to have sought to be overshadowed by his diagnosis.

The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, taking several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and receiving the biggest number of official guests to the UK for decades, featuring the German president in recent days.

Charity Broadcast Event

This Friday's Stand Up to Cancer programme on Channel 4, presented by well-known figures such as a team of famous hosts, will urge people not to be frightened of getting cancer checks.

Each presenter have been affected by cancer - one host said last month she had undergone surgery for the disease, while Clare Balding was diagnosed with thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously spoken about his parent, who had stomach cancer and then later blood cancer.

The programme will appeal to the approximate millions of people in the UK who health organisations estimate are not compliant with public health checks, with an online checker to let people check if they are qualified for examinations for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an bid to clarify cancer checks and demonstrate the importance of early diagnosis there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"My aim is to remove the anxiety from health checks and demonstrate the public that they are not on their own in this," commented Davina McCall.

Available Screening Programmes

Right now in the UK, there are a number of publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to certain age groups.

A emerging lung cancer screening programme is also being phased in for individuals at potential risk of being diagnosed with the disease, specifically targeting people of a certain age, who are smokers or were former smokers.

Men may enquire about specific tests, but there is no national programme currently available.

Ongoing Efforts

The fundraising campaign, which has raised £113m over the past decade, is funding multiple clinical trials encompassing 13,000 patients.

King Charles, in a address for guests at a reception for support groups in the spring, had referred to recognising the "overwhelming and at times alarming experience" for cancer sufferers and their loved ones.

But he noted his personal journey of living with cancer had revealed that "the most difficult times of illness can be alleviated by the support of carers," as he praised those who supported those receiving treatment.

Official sources has not disclosed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has received. The King's cancer was detected subsequent to he had had a prostate procedure.
