"My survival may not have endured if both grenades had detonated. Bipin exhibited bravery and threw the device out," Dhan Bahadur Chaudhary told media outlets. The survivor was commenting after the Israeli military confirmed his friend's body as being one of four dead captives returned by Hamas under the recent truce agreement. Bipin was twenty-three and working on a kibbutz when he was taken by Hamas into captivity along with 250 others on 7 October 2023. It's unknown the circumstances of he passed away. The student's family and friends prayed right up to the release deadline that he might be among surviving hostages released on 13 October, but he was not, and a day later their deepest concerns were confirmed. Assault Details The student, Dhan Bahadur and fifteen other Nepalese farming students had been in Israel for just over three weeks when Kibbutz Alumim was assaulted. "The students were aware that there may be a war in Israel. But we had little expectation that there may be any physical assault of that magnitude," the survivor said. "We believed that there might be missile attacks and we would be safe if we stay below ground, in the shelters." For the young individuals who'd been selected under the Israeli government's "educational initiative" it was a great opportunity to improve circumstances for themselves and their loved ones in Nepal. Dhan Bahadur attributes his survival to his friend's heroic actions. "At the time of attack, multiple explosives were launched near the shelters. He [Bipin] grabbed a device and hurled it outside; one detonated within. Because of that blast, I and several companions were injured," he says. "Bipin was unharmed at that moment. If the two grenades had detonated, I certainly would not have been speaking with you today." Ten of the Nepalese students were lost in the assault. Bipin was the only one taken hostage. "The friends met for the last time when he and others were being shifted to a different shelter," Dhan Bahadur explains. "Since, after the wounding, was immobile and remained stayed in the first shelter. I came to know that there were multiple assaults in the shelter where Bipin took shelter and he was taken prisoner from there." He and Bipin were classmates in Far Western University School of Agriculture in Tikapur, Nepal. "We undertook all possible attempts from our sides to ensure his release. We attempted everything. But yesterday, we had to face such devastating news. The entire nation is in grief. Personally do not know how to express. Truly have no words to describe my sadness." Dhan Bahadur says his friend and other colleagues had the same aspiration of making little earnings and establishing their personal enterprise after coming back from the educational opportunity in Israel. "He loved playing soccer and sports. The friends would converse for extended periods about our goals and aspirations. He wanted to achieve his physique in good shape and to buy a latest mobile phone. Together even created a musical piece about friendship with a phone. Bipin also spoke about showcasing himself in a visual production." There's no way of externally confirming that. But if it's the case, Dhan Bahadur commented, the global authorities should ask Hamas about why it happened. He said he had not received any assistance from national authorities following his injury but hoped the Israeli government would help his friend's relatives. The student's immediate relatives have not released any comment so far. Footage from 7 October depicted him walking inside a medical facility in the urban area. The relatives obtained no indication of life for a twelve months, until the Israeli military shared a video of him in detention around that period. Relatives characterized the material as "proof of survival" just moments before the truce agreement was agreed, and were hoping for a positive outcome. Now in his hometown of Bhimdutta municipality the student's loved ones are mourning after hearing news of his passing.
