The Gunners' boss feels assured that his squad can keep managing with injury setbacks following confirming that forward Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined since August due to an operation on his knee. Initially expected to come back at the start of this month, the manager stated the player hit a snag when stepping up his recovery and could not progress “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” Arteta said.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This development leaves a dilemma for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. Arteta must choose between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return after a fitness issue off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus remains an option following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

More doubts surround centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in central defence for the league leaders.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on squad depth ahead of this season has placed the club in a far better place to navigate such absences.

Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit

In response if more options was benefiting their league challenge, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the problems with the backline,” he noted.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we must deploy players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Arteta's Support for Suffering Star

Addressing the delay noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his personal desire to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, for me, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I watch him struggle being outside.”

“His fitness history is exceptional, he's rarely been injured, and I look forward to have him back with the squad and playing because I feel it’s going to be a huge lift.”
