Citizens have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the morning session ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Key Points in Talks

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war governance of the region

Citizen Feeling

In the city's public square previously, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israelis want the war to end in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side district, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the corpses of several people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of the city indicated additional fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, health workers stated.
