Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
