Gianni Infantino has opened the door to further winter World Cups and global club championships, asserting that soccer must maintain a flexible outlook about relocating major tournaments out of the summer months.

Talks in Progress for Future Match Timetable

Discussions are under way about the schedule beyond 2030, a major sticking point because of heightened congestion caused by larger tournaments. FIFA has set up a working group to analyze the situation, and the global governing body has given itself a headache by granting the 2034 tournament to the Gulf country. The event will likely be organized in colder seasons, similar to Qatar 2022. Infantino suggested soccer must become accustomed to detaching from summer months in Europe.

“We are already into the nitty-gritty, ongoing conversations are happening,” he said. “This isn't only about a single tournament, it involves wider thinking. Even when playing in parts of Europe summer months can be extremely warm.”

Enhancing the Competition Timetable

The president made these comments during the European Football Clubs annual meeting in the Italian capital. He shared comparable views to hundreds of attendees, saying: “We must consider internationalizing the international match calendar.” He cited October and March as “periods suitable for global play.”

Such a drastic reconfiguration would cause ructions, although FIFA's ability to carry out its plans could be challenged in case of a registered objection regarding the calendar implementation, filed to the European Commission earlier by football leagues, triggers legal processes.

Expanding the Club World Cup

The governing body is considering ways to expand the global club competition. A larger tournament setup could be implemented next time, with the potential for entry tournaments that narrows the field to 32 teams. Infantino mentioned ambitious plans in his conference presentation, indicating they would “endeavor to find ways to grow this competition, more successful, more significant.”

Candidate Nations for Tournament

The Iberian and North African nations are frontrunners to stage the future competition, set to happen in warmer months, while other possibilities have been weighed up. An early revisit to the US is possible and sources suggest the Chinese government, which was scheduled to stage the event in 2021 until Covid-19 hit, remains interested.

Officials are thinking about staging the international tournament every two years post-2029. Qatar appears most likely to host any 2031 edition, an arrangement that could be easier to manage if Infantino's favored rejig are implemented with winter dates would be required.

Concerns About Domestic Games Abroad

Infantino said any long-term move towards holding domestic competitions in foreign countries would be a significant danger. Recent developments saw permission granted for fixtures in the United States and Down Under, noting this permission came on an exceptional basis. The organization's ultimate decision is essentially automatic, yet Infantino seemed to imply the concept raised concerns.

“Our system includes featuring matches at national level, regionally and worldwide,” he detailed. “This is the structure that developed football the world's most popular sport worldwide. If we want to break this framework, we endanger everything.”
