Armed conflict at school
Learning centers in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for armed groups

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The criminal group invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
